Brooklyn Tech began the 2012 season this past Sunday August 19 at Wang Field in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
Expectations are high for this talented group of Engineers.  The Varsity and Junior Varsity hit the field with their new t-shirts with the slogan for this season on the back.  "Bleed Blue", this years mantra, emphasizes the family that they have become throughout the off-season.

Tech Football also welcomed over 25 new incoming freshmen on to the team this week.  Everyone is looking forward to seeing who among them will be future stars.

The varsity schedule is available on psal.org and can be seen on the new schedule banner hanging on the corner of Fulton and Clermont.  The Junior Varsity schedule is also available on psal.org.

Talented Trio Raises Brooklyn Tech Awareness

Barclays Center isn’t the only thing that’s being built in downtown Brooklyn. A few blocks away, Brooklyn Tech’s reputation as a football program is also growing.

“We’re getting the word out there,” rising senior quarterback Brandon Schneider said. “We’re not just an academic school. We can play football, people.”

College coaches are now flocking to the corner of Clermont Ave. and Fulton St. to check out a trio of high-level rising seniors – wide receivers Kyvaune Brammer, James Gales and defensive end Thomas Plonski.

“This is the most attention anyone has paid to Brooklyn Tech football players since I’ve been here,” said Kyle McKenna, who is entering his fourth year as head coach.

Brammer said he came to Brooklyn Tech because of its high academic standards with the plans of playing basketball. A fan of the EA Sports Madden video games, Brammer decided to give football a go his freshman year.

It turned out to be the best hunch he’s ever played.

A year ago, the 6-foot-3, 200-pound Brammer was tied with Lincoln’s Denzel Duchenne atop the PSAL’s City Championship division with six touchdown receptions.

“I think he’s a dynamic guy who has great range,” McKenna said. “He can go and catch a bad ball just as good as he can catch a good ball.”

McKenna said Brammer was underrated until a breakout performance in Week 3 against Curtis. He had seven catches for 166 yards with a pair of touchdowns.

“It really showed his range in the types of catches he was making and how he was taking over the game,” McKenna said.

“It was the opportunity I’ve been waiting for to do what I wanted to do,” Brammer said. “It was a little window into the future.”

Brammer’s future is likely at the University of Buffalo, where he verbally committed in early May. He’s also received offers from Fordham, Wagner and Monmouth and has interest from UMass, Marist and Towson.

“To go from a little guy with no hands to this right now is a humbling experience,” Brammer said. “It really feels good.”

Like Brammer, Gales is a receiver with blistering speed and a 90 average, which is also why both players are drawing interest from Ivy League programs. Both competed well at the Yale Camp and Gales is currently at the Princeton Camp.

Gales, who rushed for 1,067 yards and 14 touchdowns last year, also impressed at the UConn camp, which is why the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder has offers from Albany and Fordham. His future, McKenna said, is likely on the defensive end as a cover corner.

“He can be physical with big receivers and cover small, quick ones as well,” McKenna said.

The two lightning quick rising seniors give Schneider extra confidence as he takes over for Kevi Shyti as a first-year starting quarter.

“The amount of weapons we have on this team is amazing,” he said. “I’m really lucky to be on this team.”

While he doesn’t have the lightning speed of Brammer and Gales, Plonski has the total package at 6-foot-6, 240 pounds. That’s why he holds offers from FCS schools Old Dominion, Wagner, Marist, James Madison, Fordham and Villanova.

“He has an awesome motor, it’s always running,” McKenna said. “He chases down things from behind, he’s very hard to block one-on-one and he has a very high football IQ. He has the ability to read things pretty quickly.”

At Brooklyn Tech, Plonski, who had 52 tackles and eight sacks as a junior, is an end in the Engineers 4-3 defensive scheme. He could project in the same role in a 3-4 defense or maybe play on the interior of a 4-3 on the next level.

“It’s great for Brooklyn Tech, it’s great for the city and it’s great for me,” Plonski said. “I get to play football and get a good education at any of these schools offering me a scholarship.”

Plonski, whose brother Michael was a standout at Brooklyn Tech from 2007-11, went to James Madison’s Junior Day, checked out Fordham a few weeks ago and has plans to visit Villanova Tuesday. He’ll likely choose among those three programs and he wants to make his verbal commitment before the start of the season.

“At Brooklyn Tech we haven’t really had D-I players in a while, but hopefully this is the first of many,” Plonski said. “Hopefully we can make this a tradition of going to school for free to play football.”

While Brammer, Gales and Plonski have helped raise the awareness of the Brooklyn Tech program, expectations inside remain as high as ever.

“I think expectations outside of here might be a little higher based on the attention these guys are getting, but these guys have worked really hard for three years to get to the point they’re at,” McKenna said. “They welcome those expectations because they have the same expectations for themselves.”

City Wrestling Championship features Tech Football Players

The PSAL Team Wrestling Championships will take place at John Bowne High School in Queens on Wednesday January 18th. Two members of the Tech Football team will be playing a major role in the match, vs Grand Street Campus. Oyeleye Ojo will wrestle in the 175 lb weight class and Shaquille Williams will start at the super-heavyweight. Best of luck to the Tech Wrestling program in their quest for back-to-back city championships.

Semper Fi Proving Ground Combine

Thomas Plonski participated in the Semper Fi Proving Ground Combine in Phoenix, Arizona. 247 Sports named him as one of the Top 10 participants at the combine.

But here you'll discover the top five running backs in the PSAL's highest-ranked Championship Division. Watch out for these young runners in the upcoming city playoffs and beyond, as they have what it takes to play on the next level.

5. Ricardo Appleton, Sheepshead Bay — Appleton, who has 902 yards and 10 touchdowns, has carried the Sharks' offense. He was especially impressive in week four against a stingy Flushing team with 175 yards and a pair of touchdowns. The senior has hit pay dirt at least once in every game this season.

4. James Gales, Brooklyn Tech — Gales is one of the best athletes in the city. The junior plays defensive back, receiver, returns kicks and plays running back. Clearly, running the ball is his best skill. Gales (935 yards and 13 touchdowns) has at least 100 yards and a TD in every game this season. In his best performance, against Lehman, he racked up 247 yards and four touchdowns.

3. Kareem Folkes, Abraham Lincoln — Folkes took over in the backfield this year for the Railsplitters, who reached last year's city championship game. The senior hasn't let them down. Folkes has 944 yards and a league-leading 14 touchdowns on the ground. Folkes kicked off the season with 224 yards and three touchdowns against New Utrecht and hasn't looked back.

2. Benjamin Ezike, Susan Wagner — Ezike, who last season rushed for all of 45 yards, has been a true find for the Falcons. The senior has chewed up 1,239 yards on the ground with 11 touchdowns. In a week three showdown with the league's leading rusher, David White, Ezike rumbled for 249 yards and four touchdowns. His totals are amazing when you consider his 86-yard game in week one.

1. David White, Herbert H. Lehman — White is running away with PSAL rushing title; he has 1,504 rushing and 13 touchdowns on the ground. In week four, against Brooklyn Tech, the senior erupted for 300 yards and four touchdowns. It was his second 300 yard game of the season and third game with at least three touchdowns. White is being looked at by local colleges such as Temple, Syracuse and Rutgers, but hasn't been offered a scholarship—not yet, anyway.

Honorable mentions: Senior Brent Rachel of William E. Grady leads the Bowl Division—the league's second-tier grouping—with 1.035 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. Petrides Senior Joseph Henry has rushed for 1,260 yards and 11 touchdowns to lead the lower-ranked Cup Division.

TWO GAMES TO GO!

We need to win the next two games to make it to the playoffs. Last year, Tech played Jefferson twice, at homecoming and in the playoffs. At homecoming, Tech lost 40-38, but avenged the lost in the playoffs winning 30-28 in double overtime. The game will be played Saturday at Jefferson's stadium at Noon. The field is located at 12508 Flatland Avenue. The 2 train is about 5 blocks away from the field.

This past Sunday, the Engineers took the field for the Adam J. Cirillo Classic football game, which marks homecoming for Brooklyn Tech Alumni. The result was disappointing with a 20-16 loss to Sheepshead Bay, but many alumni, students, family and friends were on hand to support the Engineers. On Monday, the JV Football team defeated Sheepshead Bay at home to close out the long weekend's festivities.

No. 9 Brooklyn Tech 44, John Adams 14: James Gales rushed for 110 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown, returned an interception 82 yards for a score and threw a 2-point conversion for Brooklyn Tech (1-0), which travels to Canarsie next week. Kevi Shyti was 7-of-11 passing for 53 yards with two touchdowns, including one on the ground. Suyeta Griffin returned an interception for a touchdown, Adonijah Smith had a kickoff return for a score and Kyvaune Brammer caught a 15-yard touchdown pass. Adams, which falls to 0-1, hosts Susan Wagner in Week 2.
